The packs are farther away than I expected and it’s late morning by the time we reach them.

“You ran all this way?” I ask.

“We did,” Katie says, breathing hard.

“It seems like a lot further of a distance when you’re walking it in the daytime,” Wes adds. “But when we were running last night, it was like time and fatigue ceased to exist. There was only escape.”

“Speak for yourself,” Derek says, breathing hard. “I thought I was going to collapse. It felt like we ran forever.”

Just then, a roll of distant thunder echoes off in the distance. We all turn and look. The packs were dropped right there on the trail with tall stands of trees rising up in all directions so it is difficult to see how big the oncoming storm is. Still, I feel warning bells begin to ring inside of me.

“We should get moving,” I say.
